Possibly the best to come out of the LES of Manhattan.
After Erasmus and while at Minnesota Ollie would come to play at PS 110. Honey and his (two?) brothers ran a store on Catherine Street that sold insurance-sale items -- in other words, shipments of goods for which owners had put in insurance damage claims. Once the owners were paid, the insurance companies recouped some of their costs by selling the shipments to Honeys (and I'm sure, to other similar establishments). You might find just about anything there: once, it was yards and yards of lavish crewel-work fabric; another time, beautifully painted Chinese vases. It could be anything, and everything was a bargain. My mother loved the store, and she loved Honey. He could speak 'bargaining' in all the languages of polyglot lower Manhattan.susanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03521129890410625179noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5915315601746686664.post-56327104702077561612021-08-18T17:26:30.574-07:002021-08-18T17:26:30.574-07:00We would always look for Joe to go through our Wes...We would always look for Joe to go through our West Islip neighborhoodAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01463548306009328289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5915315601746686664.post-37913481997505012912021-08-16T11:45:09.288-07:002021-08-16T11:45:09.288-07:00Lorraine, when I was a boy, my grandmother, France...Lorraine, when I was a boy, my grandmother, Frances (who was born in Mt Vernon circa 1900) told me about her brother, the daredevil. She even showed me a newspaper clipping not unlike this one. He died jumping off the Washington Bridge and his body was never found. She said he was a bit of a daredevil and that he had jumped of other bridges. My brother and I rode a bus from Tuskegee Institute, AL with a small group of other campers. I remember my brother Howard and I were the youngest from our group attending. I remember when we first reached New York we were paired with a couple from Yonkers, NY and stayed with them before being taken to the camp. The song Moon River always triggers memories of camp and that's what made me Google to see if the camp still existed. What a surprise to find this blog and several comments asking about the attendees that were sent from the south during the civil rights movement. I've never thought about the times I attended nor do I remember my parents discussing it in those terms. However, that was definitely the time I attended!
TheSkegeeGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10910499510282901285noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5915315601746686664.post-10083492175820668242021-03-13T14:48:58.331-08:002021-03-13T14:48:58.331-08:00Hello Cathy:
