All this talk of 7th Street made me wax nostalgic for Knickerbocker Village (boy I'd like to know the origin of that expression). I combined an excerpt about Knickerbocker from Lopate's book with some archival Cherry Street and Five Points slum scenes (NYPL.org) and pictures I took last year. One of them shows the remnants of Joe's Luncheonette on Monroe Street where I had many an egg cream. Here's the slide show
