Knickerbocker Tales: From 4/17/06

Reminiscences with Marty , the Knickerbocker Village ringelevio mavin, today. I'm amazed at his memory of our shared youth. Mine's gone and I never took drugs! He told me of the secret water tower hiding spot he shared with Murray Schefflin. Also:1. Eddie Flannery, the dreaded Irish bully 2. The Wieseltier brothers and father-tough Jews from the 5th floor of 14 Monroe Street who took on the Irish and Italian brutes. Could Leon Wieseltier, grown up noted author and New Republic critic, be one of them? 3. Spino and Crazy George, Flannery's gang mates. 4. Joey Maldonado being recruited away from our little league team by St. Joseph. 5. Joey Maldonado recruiting away from me my girl friend Nancy Bueller 6. Morton Byrd, Robert Orage and Jackson-our few black playmates. 7. Joey Katz, Evelyn Katz and their dark haired curvaceous cousin Elaine Aaronson. She was Larry Levy's cousin as well. 8. Stewie Brokowsky's encounters with loose teen shicksas 9. The different color safety squad badges. 10. Marty's meals with the Maldonado family at the off limits Smith Houses. 11. The ex-con Marty Ricco, who supposedly killed someone who cursed his dead mother. Hopefully more will come

My name is Frank Stapleton and I lived in the Al Smith Projects from 1950-1960 and formed a baseball team called The Coleman Orioles...Morton Byrd was our catcher. Our group of friends spent a lot of time playing games in the Knickerbocker cellars. I also had a crush on Bernadette Tanahey who lived in KV. Those were good days.
